The Boy's First Cast!

I heard the screams from a boy..but as a seasoned mother OF a boy, I have learned to pause, wait for the next cry and THEN run to the rescue. THIS time, when I found a boy, he was curled into the fetal position, holding his foot and sobbing..uncontrollably.
I saw the "Decorative Boulders" that he had taken a fancy to, loved to pick up the stones that "I" couldnt even budge..but he would pry them up with his 18m strenghth and throw them into our kiddy pool. Today, the luck of the Irish was NOT with him, and the gigantic polished boulder landed RIGHT on his foot.
I actually waited the night, not wanting to sit in the ER all night long. I dosed him with as much pain killer as I could. It didnt matter, I knew in my heart of all mothers hearts that there was NO avoiding the inevitable.."The First Broken Bone". So off to the urgent care to get x-rays, then to the Peds to get a referral. I tried to help him protect it..but every time his little toe hit the ground he SCREAMED! It COULDNT OF BEEN A MINUTE TOO SOON when the Peds Bone Specialist said "What color cast?" I blurted out BLUE as it is his favorite color and I just wanted Lil' Mikas Toe to be protected. The funny thing about kids is that they will hurt the toe, and then go right back to walking and HURT the toe again! They have no memory of what REALLY hurt the toe! Very difficult for a Mommy of a 2 yr old!!
Oddly enough, the Peds Bone Specialist said within minutes he would master walking WITH it and it wouldnt slow him down ONE BIT! He was right..zooom Mikas went past us, just hobbling along like nothing could hold HIM down!

I Gotta say "Phew" I lived thru his 1st catastrophe rather well. Reed had been working 60 days straight and it was on me to be the mommy of a boy. I give myself an A for keeping calm, taking care of a wounded boy, making clear decisions and NOT CRYING!! I know, I know, this will be 1 of many injurys I will have to endure
